Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub
Shower Thought: “I smell like a pina colada”
Blessed with pretty resilient skin (thanks Mom!) I’m constantly trying new products for my face and body, and lately have taken up creating various sugar and salt scrubs. They exfoliate, hydrate, and they smell so fresh and authentic.
My current favorite is a coconut oil + citrus + sugar scrub. And the best part is - you don’t need to follow any kind of recipe - you have full control over the texture of these scrubs. My general rule of thumb is 2 parts sugar to 1 part oil and a few drops of essential oil.
I’ve been leaning towards coconut oil purely for the hydration factor. When you’re using it in the shower, it feels like you can’t wash off all of the oil - which is a good thing, as then it absorbs into your skin and is great for elbows, ankles, and anywhere else that is prone to dryness.
Okay, coconut citrus sugar scrub. Basic recipe below, and I’ve included some additional notes and tips below!
Here you go:
1 cup coconut oil (I don’t melt it, and my measurements are approximate)
2 cups sugar
3-4 drops essential oil
zest of your favorite citrus (I’m partial to lemon or grapefruit)
Mix together. Seriously. That’s all you have to do.
The FAQs
What kind of base oil should I use?
There’s olive oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, and more. I like coconut oil as I like the texture of the unmelted oil, and I like the way it hydrates my skin.
I’ve been using Dr. Bronner’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
What kind of sugar?
Any kind. Seriously. If you have white sugar on hand - go for it! I prefer using turbinado sugar (aka raw sugar) as it’s the most course and I feel like the best to exfoliate, but my current batch was made with plain old white sugar.
Essential Oils?
If you love the smell of coconut - then you don’t need to add any other essential oils.
“If you like Pina Coladas” - add a little citrus!
I’m really liking the Rocky Mountain Oil company - the scents are fresh and a little goes a long way
How long do they last?
Trust me. You’ll use this faster than you think you will.
Since there is sugar, and citrus zest, and heat from the shower there is always the possibility of mold or fermentation - No Preservatives! Keep the lid tight, and try to limit the amount of water that gets into the jar.
Lastly - experiment! Try different oils, sugars (or salts!) to see what works best for you!
