Summer Of saying yes
This Summer I decided to say yes as much as possible, especially for things out of my comfort zone.
I thought back to when I would host some students from Cal every year at work, where I and some of my colleagues would share how we got to where we are, and what do we wish we’d known at 20. (I’m sure we could all write a book!) I always ended my part by encouraging them to say yes…to not let opportunity pass by because they were unsure, and that there is just as much value in learning what you don’t like, as there is in learning what you do. And I realized, I was AWFUL at taking my own (really solid) advice. So I did.
I started saying Yes.
take a last minute trip without really making plans in advance? Yes.
commit to going to the gym 5-6 days a week? Yes.
cook new recipes? Yes.
decide to try and become a runner (or at least someone who doesn’t hate running?) Yes.
start therapy? Yes.
get invited in an adventure where I don’t totally know what I’m doing? Yes.
So far this summer I’ve:
gained a new travel partner in a former colleague (and when you find a friend you can travel with and still be friends with after? That is GOLD - here’s looking at you, Kiran!)
lost some weight, but feel so much better
started to consider really putting together a cookbook/prioritizing sharing my culinary adventures on this blog
have a TON of respect for the runners I see down at Chrissy Field
learned so much about myself, and that it’s okay to not be okay
become basically an expert paddle boarder
and that’s just to name a few.
So - say yes. Give something new a try. Sure - you could hate it, but at least, then you’d know!
Muchly,
Katy
