My New Favorite Seasoning

For Christmas, I often like to make gifts. And this year was no different. I made Limoncello, I knit blankets. And I created THE BEST seasoning. It’s my take on an “Italian Blend” and I’m obsessed. I use it to season pretty much anything, as salad dressing, and I love mixing it with olive oil and vinegar for dipping foccacia.

I started by making my own garlic powder. Now, I know you can buy it - but I find that the garlic powder in the store ends up more a garlic mist when I open the container. I also had no idea how easy it was to make garlic powder.

Garlic Powder

  • 2 heads of garlic

  • baking sheet

Thinly slice the garlic and lay it on the baking sheet. Bake at the lowest temperature your oven has for 1.5-2 hours, until the slices are fully dried. Then grind them in a spice grinder, or I used my mortar and pestal.

That’s it. Seriously.

My spice blend made about 14 4oz bottles.

Spice Blend

  • 1.5 C garlic powder

  • 1 C dried oregano

  • 1 C dried thyme

  • 1 C dried basil (I also dried my own basil - just like the garlic above)

  • 1 C pepper

  • 1 C crushed red pepper

  • 3/4 C dried parsley (I don’t really like parsley)

  • 3/4 C salt

  • 3/4 C dried rosemary (i ground mine with the mortar and pestal)

Mix them together, and bottle it! I use these standard spice jars and just make my own sticker/label.

You can change the amounts based on what you like, or don’t like. For example, I love garlic, but parsley, not so much.

Enjoy!

Muchly,

Katy
